Lorain County Clerk of Courts: Records, Case Access & Court Services

The Lorain County Clerk of Courts is the official office for Lorain County Court of Common Pleas records, civil filings, criminal filings, domestic relations filings, Ninth District Court of Appeals filings, docket sheets, court payments, records research, auto titles, watercraft titles, temporary tags, and passport acceptance services.

For most case searches, start with the Clerk’s online docket access for Common Pleas Civil, Criminal, Domestic Relations, and Ninth District Court of Appeals records. For deeds, mortgages, leases, property-alert tools, and land-record recording, use the Lorain County Recorder instead of the Clerk of Courts.

This is especially important for older records, records not available online, copy questions, case-index help, or situations where the online docket shows that something exists but does not give you the actual document you need.

What the Lorain County Clerk Legal Division Handles

The Clerk of Court of Common Pleas performs administrative and ministerial duties for the Court of Common Pleas. That includes record creation, record maintenance, record reporting, record retention, issuing process, and receiving and disbursing money paid into the court system.

Lorain County’s Legal Division is separated into practical public-facing units. Knowing the right division helps you avoid calling the wrong room or searching the wrong record system.

Civil Division Files cases between parties, foreclosures, certificates of judgment, civil case filings, appellate case filings, and notary public applications.
Criminal Division Handles felony criminal cases, including cases bound over from municipal courts and original indictments from the grand jury.
Domestic Relations Division Handles divorce, no-fault divorce, annulment, and civil protection/domestic violence case documents.
Finance Division Tracks case financial information, processes court costs, fines, restitution, payment plans, and credit-card phone payments.
Records Division Maintains case records and indexes, with public terminals for computerized index and docket sheets.
Court of Appeals filings The Clerk’s Civil Division handles appeals cases to Ohio’s Ninth District Court of Appeals.
No legal advice: the Clerk’s office is prohibited by law from giving legal advice. Clerk staff can explain filing and records procedures, but they cannot tell you what to file, what legal strategy to use, or whether you will win.

E-Filing, Online Payments, Court Costs, Fines, and Restitution

Lorain County’s court resources now mention e-filing availability. The Common Pleas Court notes that the Clerk began accepting limited e-filings as of Monday, December 8, 2025. Because the rollout is limited, check the official Clerk and court instructions before assuming your filing type is accepted electronically.

The Finance Division tracks financial information for civil, criminal, domestic relations, and related cases. It also handles payments made for court costs, fines, and restitution, sets up payment plans, and processes credit-card payments over the phone.

Lorain County Clerk of Courts vs Recorder: Which Office Do You Need?

In Ohio, the Clerk of Courts is not the same as the County Recorder. The Clerk handles Common Pleas court records, court filings, docket sheets, court payments, case indexes, and auto titles. The Recorder handles many land and recorded-property documents.

Use the Lorain County Recorder for deeds, mortgages, leases, affidavits, certificates of transfer, UCC real-estate filings, recorded land documents, Recorder property search, property alerts, and Recorder copy requests.

Use the Clerk of Courts for

  • Common Pleas civil, criminal, domestic relations, and appeals records.
  • Case numbers, docket sheets, court calendars, and court filings.
  • Court costs, fines, restitution, and payment plans.
  • Records Division indexes and case files.
  • Auto titles, watercraft titles, temporary tags, and passports.

Use the Recorder for

  • Deeds, mortgages, leases, affidavits, and certificates of transfer.
  • Property record search and recorded land documents.
  • Recording fees and document-standardization requirements.
  • Property Alerts and Recorder copy requests.
  • Veterans discharge certified-copy services where applicable.
Recorder fee reminder: the Recorder’s 2026 fee page lists $39.00 for the first two pages of many standard recordings and $8.00 for each additional page. That is a Recorder fee, not a Common Pleas court-copy fee.

Marriage Licenses, Wills, Probate, and Juvenile Records

A common mistake is asking the Clerk of Courts for a marriage license or a will. The Lorain County Clerk FAQ directs users to the Lorain County Probate Court for marriage licenses and copies of wills.

Probate Court is located in the Justice Center, but it is a different court function. The Probate Court website states that marriage applications are by appointment only and walk-ins are not permitted.

Probate Court address Lorain County Probate Court, Justice Center, 225 Court Street, Room 611, Elyria, OH 44035.
Marriage appointment phone 440-329-5295.
Probate main phone 440-329-5175.
Juvenile note Juvenile cases are handled by Domestic Relations Court resources; public access may differ from ordinary civil or criminal case search.

Privacy, Public Access Limits, Sealed Records, and Background Search Caution

Court dockets are public records unless a law or court order restricts access. The Clerk explains that some case types may not be publicly available for viewing online and that the office has no authority to remove cases from the public record unless a law or court order requires it.

The Clerk also explains that even after a judgment is paid and satisfied, the fact that a case was filed, a judgment was rendered, and the judgment was satisfied remains part of the public record. A paid case is not automatically erased from court files.

Sealed or restricted records Some case information may be sealed, restricted, confidential, or not publicly viewable online.
Older records Older pre-online records may require in-person or staff-assisted Records Division research.
Legal advice limit The Clerk can explain procedures but cannot give legal advice.
Verify before relying Use certified copies or official confirmation when a record affects legal, court, finance, licensing, or title decisions.
